Can a Virus Affect Your Vision
In this article, you will learn about can a virus affect your vision. A virus is a very small particle that is capable of infecting a cell and potentially causing disease. Viruses are like hijackers. They invade living, normal cells and use those cells to multiply and produce other viruses like themselves. This can kill, damage, or change the cells and make you sick. Different viruses attack certain cells in your body such as your liver, respiratory system, or blood. Viruses cause familiar infectious diseases such as the common cold, flu and warts. They also cause severe illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, smallpox, and Ebola. Viruses seem pretty scary, don’t they? There’s something even more terrifying about viruses, it’s the thought of them affecting your vision.
So, a question you should be asking is, “CAN A VIRUS AFFECT YOUR VISION?”
YES, VIRUSES CAN AFFECT YOUR VISION!
Viral eye infections, by their very essence, affect the eye and its functions, chief among them vision. In milder cases of infection, such as with conjunctivitis, the eye may become delicate to light or vision may become blurred due to build up of discharge. More severe cases, such as CMV retinitis, can damage the retina, the tissue at the back of the eye that handles eyesight, leading to more serious vision problems. Long term damage can permanently damage the retina or cause it to become detached, leading to blindness.
Here are a Few Eye Diseases that Viruses Cause :
Pink Eye –
Pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the thin clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelid. Conjunctivitis can have several causes (see below), but many eye doctors use the term “pink eye” to refer only to viral conjunctivitis, a highly contagious infection caused by a variety of viruses. Children get it a lot. It can be highly contagious (it spreads rapidly in schools and day cares), but it’s rarely serious. It’s very unlikely to damage your vision, especially if you find it and treat it quickly. When you take care to prevent its spread and do all the things your doctor recommends, pinkeye clears up with no long-term problems. Unlike with bacterial infections, antibiotics will not work against viruses. No eye drops or ointments are effective against the common viruses that cause viral conjunctivitis. But viral conjunctivitis is self-limited, which means it will go away by itself after a short time. Treatment of viral conjunctivitis usually involves supportive therapies, such as eye drops, that help reduce the symptoms: for example, vasoconstrictors to whiten the eye, decongestants to reduce the surface swelling and antihistamines to reduce occasional itching. Treatments usually are continued for one to two weeks, depending on the severity of the infection.
Eye Herpes –
Like many viruses, the herpes simplex 1 and varicella-zoster viruses are present in most adults. The viruses in the herpes family usually live around the nerve fibres in humans without ever causing a problem. Occasionally, the viruses will start to multiply, or they will move from one area of the body to another, and that is when herpetic disease breaks out. This often happens when the immune system of the body is weakened by some other health problem.
Herpes keratitis is the most common form of eye herpes and is a viral corneal infection. Ocular herpes in this form generally affects only the top layer, or the epithelium, of the cornea, and usually heals without scarring.
Some of the symptoms depend on what part of the eye is affected.
Examples of these Symptoms Include :
• Feeling as if something is in the eye
• Light sensitivity
Certain triggers can sometimes cause a dormant virus to start reproducing and cause eye irritation.
Examples of these Triggers Include:
• Major surgery or dental procedures
• Trauma or severe injury
