Five Common Symptoms of Refractive Errors

Five Common Symptoms of Refractive Errors

In this article, you will learn about five common symptoms of refractive errors. Refractive errors are common eye disorders related to the focusing capability of your eyes. If you have this type of eye ailment, you will find it difficult to see clearly because your eyes cannot focus properly. When people with good vision look at an object, the image is focused on the back of the eye (retina). If you have a refractive error, the image is not focused exactly on the retina and the object appears blurred. Discrepancies to your vision usually occur gradually and they may not be detected until you have an eye test.

The Different Types of Refractive Errors Include :

• Astigmatism –

you have blurry vision at all distances.

• Long-Sightedness (Hyperopia) –

you have trouble focusing on objects that are close and they appear blurry.

• Presbyopia –

you have trouble reading or seeing objects that are close, which is more common in people aged 40 years or older.

• Short-Sightedness (myopia) –

you have trouble focusing on objects that are far away and they appear blurry.

Worried if you have Refractive Errors?

Here are Five Common Symptoms of Refractive Errors :

Near Sightedness –

Symptoms may include :

  1. Blurry vision when looking at distant objects.
  2. The need to squint or partially close the eyelids to see clearly.
  3. Other signs and symptoms of myopia include squinting, eye strain and headaches. Feeling fatigued when driving or playing sports also can be a symptom of uncorrected nearsightedness.
  4. Eye fatigue when you try to see objects more than a few feet away. Eye fatigue or Eyestrain is a common condition that occurs when your eyes get tired from intense use, such as while driving long distances or staring at computer screens and other digital devices.
  5. Children may have trouble seeing the blackboard at school. Adults may not be able to see street signs clearly while driving.

Far sightedness –

Symptoms may include :

  1. An aching or burning sensation around your eyes.
  2. A headache after reading or other tasks that require you to focus on something up close.
  3. You experience general eye discomfort or a headache after a prolonged interval of conducting close tasks, such as reading, writing, computer work or drawing.
  4. If you’re holding your reading material farther and farther away from your eyes in order to see it more clearly. Without even being aware of it, you may be exerting more effort to maintain the perfect distance between your eyes and the object you’re trying to see.
  5. Squinting to see more clearly

Presbyopia –

Presbyopia is often confused with farsightedness, but the two are different. Presbyopia happens when the natural lens in the eye gets less flexible.

Farsightedness –

Symptoms may include :

  1. You need to hold reading material at arm’s length.
  2. Blurred vision at a normal reading distance.
  3. The tell-tale symptom of presbyopia is blurred vision while reading, sewing, using a mobile phone, or doing anything that requires near vision.
  4. When you move things farther from your eyes they get smaller in size, so this is only a temporary and partially success full solution to presbyopia.
  5. Even if you can still see pretty well up close, presbyopia can cause headaches, eye strain and visual fatigue that makes reading and other near vision tasks less comfortable and more tiring.

Astigmatism –

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurred vision. It occurs when the cornea (the clear front cover of the eye) is irregularly shaped or sometimes because of the curvature of the lens inside the eye.

Symptoms may include :

  1. Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurry at distance as well as near. Patients with astigmatism often feel tired after reading and find that letters and words appear to be slanted.
  2. Blurry, distorted, or fuzzy vision at all distances (up close and far away).
  3. Symptoms of uncorrected astigmatism are eye strain and headaches, especially after reading or other prolonged visual tasks.
  4. Astigmatism usually causes vision to be blurred or distorted to some degree at all distances.
  5. Squinting also is a very common symptom.
